Electrolyte loss increases with exertion, as sweating intensifies. This deficit of electrolytes must be compensated by feeding in order to maintain performance. Electrolytes play a crucial role in maintaining a constant osmotic pressure in the cell.

In addition, they are essential for transport processes between intra- and extracellular space and are a prerequisite for functioning muscles. Besides physical work diarrhoea can also lead to a K deficiency. In order to maintain the osmotic balance, the possibility of free water intake must always be given.
